Setup requirements & prerequisites for earning certificates

If you would like students to meet certain prerequisites and requirements in order to earn a certificate, that can be set up through Canvas modules.

You can configure Canvas modules to have prerequisites and requirements:

• Prerequisites require students to complete an entire module before moving to the next module. Learn more about prerequisites on the Canvas website.
• Requirements require students to complete either one specific item or all items in order before the module is marked as complete and works with prerequisites to build a learning path. Learn more about requirements on the Canvas website.

Step 1: Create a new module

First, you will need to set up your modules in the order in which you wish for them to be completed.

1. Create a module using the + Module button at the top right of the Modules Index Page.
2. You will want to put your certificate module at the end of all of the required materials. Rearrange if neccessary.

Step 2: Create your certificate

1. Follow the instructions to install your certificate in your Canvas course. Add the certificate in the module you designated.
2. Once the link to the certificate appears, click on the link and create the certificate.

Step 3: Add prerequisites and requirements

For each module, you must add a prerequisite and requirements. The exception will be in the first module, where you can only create requirements.

1. Click on the kabob (3 dots) in the upper right-hand corner of the module.
2. Click Edit.
3. A side window will appear. Click + Prerequisite.
4. Select the module that occurs immediately before the current module. You have now added a prerequisite.
5. Click + Requirement.
6. Select Complete all or Complete one. If you choose Complete all, decide whether or not you want students to move through the required items in sequential order.
7. You will need to add a separate entry for each required item in your module. Click on the + Requirement button to add additional entries.
8. For each required item, indicate how you would like an item to be marked as complete. Depending on the item type, options may include View the item, Mark as done, Contribute to the page, Submit the assignment, or Score at least.
9. Once you have finished adding all module requirements, click the Save button.
10. Repeat these steps with all modules until you reach the module with your certificate.
11. Add a prerequisite to this module, but you do not need to add any requirements. Make sure to click Save.
12. When finished, Publish your module and your items.
