Video Overview

DATA SECURITY CAUTION: Institutional data, other than that classified as Public, should NOT be used in the AI Critique tool. For additional information, please consult UD's AI policies and guidelines.

Instructions

To add an AI Critique assignment to your Canvas course, you need to first create a Canvas assignment with an External Tool submission type. Once you have done this, you can then set up your AI Critique assignment within the AI Critique Learning App.

Create a Canvas Assignment with an External Tool Submission Type

  1. Click on the Assignments link in your Course Navigation Menu in Canvas.
  2. At the top right of your Assignments Index Page, click on the + Assignment button.
  3. Enter assignment details (like assignment name, instructions, point value, and dates) as you normally would.
  4. In the drop-down menu beside Submission Type, select External Tool.
  5. Click on the Find button under the Enter or find an External Tool URL heading.
  6. A pop-up window will appear. Scroll down the list of available external tools, and click on the Learning Apps Assignments link.
  7. A second pop-up window will open. Find the AI Critique Learning App, and click on the + Install button.
  8. Enter a title for your AI Critique assignment (e.g., AI Critique 1, Persuasive Essay Critique). You'll want to use a unique title so you can differentiate assignments and gradebook items.
  9. Click on the Submit button.
  10. You will return to the Configure External Tool pop-up window in Canvas. Click on the Select button in this window.
  11. Scroll down to the bottom of your Canvas assignment settings page, and click on the Save & Publish button.

Set Up the AI Critique Assignment

  1. On the assignment details page for the Canvas assignment you just created, click on the Load [Your Assignment Name] in a new window button.
  2. Enter a prompt for the AI-generated responses. For example prompts, see the Center for Online Learning's AI Critique Examples document.
  3. Decide whether or not you would like your prompt to be visible by selecting or unselecting the Make this prompt visible to students as they complete the assignment checkbox.
  4. (Optional) Select secondary instructions.
  5. Click on the Next button.
  6. Enter an assignment name (similar to the one you entered in Canvas).
  7. Add general assignment instructions for your students.
  8. Provide at least one question for your students to answer as they review the AI-generated response to your prompt. If you need to add additional questions, click on the + Add Question button.
  9. Click on the Next button.
  10. (Optional) Indicate the date and time when you would like the assignment to open, as well as the due date.
    • Note: By design, the due date in the tool is the closing date for the assignment. Students cannot access the tool after the due date, regardless of the Until date in Canvas. Therefore, an Until date is not necessary. If you would like to set an Until date in Canvas, we recommend making the Until date the due date.
  11. Select whether or not you want to enable grading. If you enable grading, provide the point value for the assignment.
  12. Click on the Save button.
  13. As the AI responses are being generated, you'll see a status update on the screen. Please keep in mind that generating responses for many students may take several minutes.
  14. Once responses are generated, review the list to ensure that a response has been generated for each student. If any students are missing a response, click on the Generate Missing Responses button.
  15. The assignment is now ready for students to complete.
