Creating Attendance Items

You can create attendance items in three ways. The first way is to create attendance items for each class meeting by clicking on the + Attendance Item button and adding the relevant details. The second way is to create attendance items on the fly by clicking on the Take Attendance Now button. Finally, you can create attendance items automatically based on your class schedule in Banner.

Adding attendance items

To add an attendance item:

  1. Navigate to the UD Attendance tool in your Canvas course.
  2. Click on the + Attendance Item button.
  3. Enter a name for the item (ex: Class 1). Use the calendar picker to set a date for the attendance item (required) and select a time from the time selector (optional). If no time is selected, the time will default to midnight.
  4. Click on the Create button to add a single attendance item, or click on the Create and Add Another button to add additional items.
  5. Once the item(s) are created, you can click on the name of an item and begin taking attendance.

Taking attendance now

To create an attendance item using the Take Attendance Now feature:

  1. Navigate to the UD Attendance tool in your Canvas course.
  2. Click on the Take Attendance Now button.
  3. An attendance item will be created with the current date and time. You may adjust the date and time later if you wish.
  4. Begin taking attendance.

Creating attendance items from class schedule

You have the option to create attendance items based on the class schedule listed in Banner. Note: This feature is only available for Canvas courses that are not cross-listed. If you have cross-listed your courses, then you will not be able to use the Create from class schedule feature.

To add attendance items from the class schedule:

  1. Navigate to the UD Attendance tool in your Canvas course.
  2. Click on the + Attendance Item button.
  3. Select Create from class schedule.
  4. Verify that the class meeting dates and times are correct and click on Generate.

    If class meeting dates and times are not available in Banner or if you’ve cross-listed your Canvas courses, a message that reads, “No class schedule available” will display on the screen and you will not be able to generate the attendance items automatically.

  5. Attendance items will be automatically created.
